Early Childhood Education
Why is it important? Children under the age of 5 represent nearly 40 percent of the population under 18 (compared to about 20 percent in Maryland); however, only one-third of three and four year olds are enrolled in the early education programs that can prepare them for kindergarten. Further, while increased enrollment in early education programs would help facilitate kindergarten readiness, LPPN families with children have significantly lower median incomes than similar families state-wide. As a low-income community, paying for early childhood programs is prohibitively expensive for many families.
